Zanzibar Prison Island Tour

Changuu Island also known as Prison Island lies about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. This half-day private guided tour takes you over to the island to discover its historic past and present, including the giant tortoises that roam around.

The island was formerly owned by an Arab and meant to be used for confinement of refractory slaves but no prisoners were ever housed; on a contrary the island became a quarantine station for yellow fever epidemics.

A Paradise for tortoise

It was bought by General Lloyd Mathews and the jail which still stands was built in 1893 and hence the name “Prison Island”. The Island also housed the Aldabra’s giant tortoises.

Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit as you will have the opportunity to enjoy the pristine beaches, snorkel, swim or sunbathe before catching the boat back to Stone Town.
